11. Conclusion
Kilinochchi Coconut Products offers more than a business opportunity—it is a platform for rural transformation. By combining traditional coconut cultivation with modern processing and ethical trade, we aim to create lasting economic impact in Northern Sri Lanka while delivering top-tier products to the world.
A special coconut development project in the Northern and Eastern provinces of Sri Lanka was announced and initiated by the Minister of Plantation Industries. The stated goal is to develop infrastructure, model coconut gardens in the territories recovered after the Sri Lankan Civil War.
In our formative years, as we researched the coconut supply across Southeast Asia, we quickly identified the Coconut Triangle near Colombo as one of the most productive coconut farming areas, not only Sri Lanka, but across SE Asia. The three districts consisting of Kurunegala, Puttalam, and Colombo cover about 66% of all total coconut acreage in the country.
Coconuts and its many byproducts are an important part of the Sri Lankan agriculture market, consisting of almost 12% of all agriculture produce. In 2016, coconut production was estimated at 3,600 million nuts. And even though Sri Lanka is the world's fifth largest producer of coconuts, global demand is outpacing supply and the Ministry of Plantation hopes to double the coconut output in the next ten years.
Rehabilitating and reinvesting in the land and the local communities devastated by the Civil War is an important step to increasing Sri Lanka's coconut productivity. From 1983 to 2009, the battle between the Tamil Tigers and government forces prevented any sort of agricultural development for export, and the health and educational levels of local communities suffered.
In conjunction with the Ministry of Plantation, the Coconut Cultivation Board is expected to participate alongside the Coconut Development Authority and the Coconut Research Institute of Sri Lanka. Nearly 100,000 acres of fertile land will be rehabilitated and redressed to coconut cultivation.
This second coconut triangle will consist of the areas of Jaffna, Mannar and Mulaitvu Districts. The Plantation Industries has allocated ~800 million rupees to the project, which includes 300,000 new coconut plants and other development projects funded by government backed loans and subsidies.
In the next couple of years, look to this region as the next hotspot of coconut development in the Southeast Asia, and look for The Coconut Cooperative to play a role in investing and working alongside the farmers in this region. National policy on coconut cultivation of Northern province.

Drying of Coconut:
The disintegrated coconut is dried at less than 600C until the moisture level reduces to 4%. It is recommended to use static bed and vibro – fluidized bed drier is used.
Feeding into Cold Pressing Oil Expeller:
Dried disintegrated coconut is fed into a cold pressing oil expeller at the rate of 40 Kg/hr. The press cake obtained is fed into the expeller again for expulsion of oil. Two Such expulsions are recommended for each quantity of dried disintegrated coconut. The expeller is run for 24 hrs at a stretch without causing any problem to it.
Extraction of Virgin Coconut Oil:
The initial moisture content of the dried disintegrated kernel is around 4%. If the substance is too dry, it is moistened with a small sprayer water bottle. The expelling temperature is less than 60°C. After two sequential extractions, the crude oil recovery is 650 g per kilo of dried kernel. The press cake output is about 350g (1 kg of dried disintegrated coconut yields 650g of virgin coconut oil and 350 g of press cake) The raw oil after cold pressing contains about 3- 5% solids by weight.
Sedimentation:
The simplest and cheapest way of purifying the oil by using the gravity of earth. The density difference between the oil and the solid particles is used to separate the fluid/solid mix. Purifying by sedimentation is recommended only for small processing capacities. For the reasons of space and time, it is not recommendable to have a sedimentation system for higher processing capacities. The sedimentation removes all particles from raw oil. The raw oil is stored in plastic barrels or in storage tanks.
Filtration:
After 2 – 3 days of sedimentation the oil is filtered using a filter press. Filter press is a pressure filtering system with a throughput capacity of 3 L/hr can be used.
Storage:
The Purified virgin coconut oil is stored in stainless steel tanks until bottling.
Bottling and sealing:
This is done manually or using a filling machine. The bottles are sealed.
Labeling :
Labeling is done manually.
Storage of Bottled VCO:
The sealed botsshould be placed in a cool dry place away from direct sunlight.
