பட்டம் உலகமெங்கும் கொண்டாடப்படும் சிறந்த கலை அறிவியல் நுட்பம் நிறைந்த கொண்டாட்டம்.மிகச்சிறந்த பொழுதுபோக்கு. ஆனால் தமிழரின் வாழ்வில் விவசாயமும் இயற்கையுடனான வாழ்வியலும் பல ஆயிரம் வருட வரலாறு. விவசாயமும் போங்கலும், நெல் வேளாண்மையும் பட்டம் விருவதும் பிரிக்க முடியாதது. தமிழர் தைப் பொங்கல் விழாவை  சூரியனுக்கும் இயற்க்கைக்கும் நன்றி சொல்லும் தமிழர் திரு நாளாக உலகெங்கும் கொண்டாடி வருகின்றனர்.

பட்டம் விடும் நாட்களில் நெல் அறுவடைக்காலம் நெருங்கும். அப்போது மழைவேண்டாம் என இயற்கையை வேண்டும் நாட்கள் அந்த இயற்கையுடன் ஒன்றிக்கலக்கவே பட்டம் விடுகின்றோம். இராவணன் காலத்தில் ஆரம்பித்த பட்டம் வானில் பறத்தல் என கொண்டாட்டங்களை  உலகத்திற்கு தந்தான் தமிழன். விவசாயமும் வானில் பறத்தலையும் அறிமுகம் செய்த தமிழன்,இன்றும் பல சிறப்புகளை படைக்கிறார்கள்.

இரு பரிநாம பட்டங்கள் விடப்பட்ட நாட்களைக்கடந்து இன்று ஆறு பரி நாமப்பட்டங்கள் 8 பரிமாணப் பட்டங்கள் என ஈழத்தில்  வந்து பட்ட ௐவிழாக்களை சிறப்பிக்கிறது. உலகம் எங்கும் பல்வேறு நாடுகளில் அவ்வாறே கொண்டாடப்படுகிறது.

இன்று வல்வெட்டித்துறை பட்டம் விடுவதிலும் புதிய வகை பட்டங்களை உருவாக்குவதிலும் மிகச்சிறப்பாக செயற்பட்டு வருகின்றனர். அவ் இளையோரின் படைப்புகள் மேலும் மேலும் கொண்டாடப்படவும் அதையே விரும்புவர்களின் வருமானம் ஈட்டும் தொழிலாகவும் மாற்றிவருகிறோம். சில வேலை வாய்ப்பையும் உருவாக்க Eelamclub குறிப்பாக தமிழர் தாயகத்தின் எதிர் காலத்தில் அக்கறையும் பற்றும் கொண்டுள்ள சிறு முதலீட்டாளரின் ஆதரவை வரவேற்க்கிறோம்.

இந்தியாவில் சீனாவில் இருந்து ஹாஇறக்குமதி செய்யப்பட்ட பட்டங்களின் பெறுமதி 1200 கோடி இந்திய ரூபாக்கள். இதைவிட தீபாவளி மற்றும் கிறித்தவ இந்துக்களின்  பண்டிகைக்கால விழாக்கு வண்ண விளக்குக்கூடுகளின் இறக்குமதி 750  கோடிகள். இதே போல இலங்கை சீனாவில் இருந்து 600 கோடி ரூபா வரையில் பட்டம்,பட்டம் சார்பான பொழுது போக்கு அம்சங்களும் விசாக் பண்டிகைக்கான வெளிச்சவிளக்குக்கூடுகளும் மற்றும் கிறிஸ்மஸ்  பண்டிகைக் காகவும் ஆண்டு தோறும் இறக்குமதி செய்கின்றது.

In Sri Lanka, kite flying is a favorite pastime for all throughout the year. But there are two major kite-flying festivals which attract tourists: One is during the Thai Pongal festival on January 15, namely, the Valvettithurai Annual Kite Festival held by the 'Valvai Vikneswara Community Centre'. The second is the Derana International Kite Festival, held in August-September, on Galle Face Green in Colombo.

What’s Thai Pongal?

Across South Asia, kite-flying is not just a celebration but is linked to agricultural seasons. It generally takes place in Sri Lanka during December-January and September-October, two seasons that herald the completion of harvest and the beginning of another round of agricultural activity in Srilanka.

According to Thai Pongal, kite-flying was originally used to predict the weather for sowing the spring crop. Farmers, with their extensive knowledge of weather conditions, used to determine the crops that could do sown by flying the kite.

Kite flying has evolved thoroughly 'kite flying associations' across South  Asia. It is a part of the region's intangible cultural heritage.

An important part of the Pongal festival in Srilanka in December-January is kite-flying, which attracts tourists from various parts of the Srilanka and diaspora Tamils. This event has an interesting story that connects it with Tamil's agricultural calendar. According to Pongal, kites were used to send messages to the water deity, sun in the sky, to stop further rainfall as the rice fields were sufficiently covered for the forthcoming harvest. According to a Tamil legend, Havanan was originally celebrated in the Tamil month of Thai, but as farmers were busy in the fields, it was decided that the festival would be celebrated with fervor once the rains were over and the farmers were free. The Pongal festival marks the time when the harvest is completed, the monsoons are retreating, and the soil is ready to welcome the upcoming summer harvest and the summer monsoon.

Celebration of Vesak in Sri Lanka

It is celebrated on the full moon day in the month of May. However, celebrations continue for about a week. It’s the perfect time to see the streets of Colombo come alive.

Though Vesak is of religious significance for Buddhists all over the world, to Sri Lanka it is what Christmas is to the West. While it is a festival of togetherness and rejoicing the birth and enlightenment of Lord Buddha, it is also a time of reflection on his death.

These towering lanterns are made from bamboo frames and covered in colored paper. The lanterns signify the memory of Buddha who delivered Dhamma’s message. And One of the traditional Vesak lanterns is called the “Atapattama” (octagon-shaped lantern) and can be decorated in beautiful shades with long frills.

What you need: ( 90% Lanterns imported from china)

• Twenty-four bamboo sticks of the same length. If you can’t find bamboo, any sort of wooden strips will be excellent too.
• Twine – lightweight string
• A sheet of board
• Decorative materials for the lantern: colored tissue paper, transparent plastic sheets, or wrapping paper.
• Scissors
• Glue
• Small candles placed in metal dishes
